Sista Circle
A two week summer program for Black and Black-biracial pre-teen and teen girls ages 12-19 in Santa Fe!
From Nicole Morris~
I am the founder of Sista Circle, an Earthseed Black Arts Alliance project. The idea came to me during the beginning phase of COVID when I witnessed my two sons lose their connection to their friends and the outside world. I'd also been listening to stories of Black people in Santa Fe through the storytelling series called "I Got A Story To Tell," which illuminated how critical it is for there to be a space for Black teens to connect. Originally I envisioned it as a camp for all genders. Still, I had to scale back the vision to something manageable that fit my skill set as an activist and educator with a background in Black feminism, sexuality, and gender theory. All of this gave way to what we now know as Sista Circle.
Thanks to financial support from New Mexico Women.org and Earthseed, we can offer this program for free, along with a $250 stipend to the girls. Lunch is provided daily, along with snacks and all supplies and materials for the duration of the program. Additionally, we have covered the cost for a full-day river run from Chama to Pilar with Santa Fe Rafting Company.
I am a mother to two sons, a professor of Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA); I am a Curriculum and Decolonizing Sex & Sexuality Specialist for Black Health New Mexico and a published writer and poet. Born and raised in Los Angeles, we moved here from Oakland, CA, about ten years ago, and the culture shock was REAL.
