earthseed black Arts Alliance New Mexico
We are Earthseed Black Arts Alliance New Mexico, a Black-led organization inspired by the science fiction of the great Octavia Butler. Earthseed focuses on centering and amplifying Black voices in Northern New Mexico as well as collaborating with Indigenous artists, artists of color and the city’s artist community as a whole. We believe artists are both at the forefront of change and are critical to the preservation of culture. We believe Black art has enormous healing potential and is a powerful tool for necessary communication, expression, and validation. Representation matters! and Black artists in New Mexico need to be represented and centered in the courageous conversations we are all having at the national level and at the micro level.

We Are Here.
“Here we are—Energy, Mass, Life, Shaping Life, Mind, Shaping Mind, God, Shaping God. Consider—We are born Not with purpose, But with potential.” ~Octavia Butler
While African Americans make up a small sector of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico populations, WE ARE HERE. We are business owners, entrepreneurs, students, creatives, workers in all aspects of the service and tourist industry.
Our children attend schools here, and we are invested in this community, we live in and love. and yet we lack representation due to our relatively small numbers. In light of the current international spotlight on systemic inequalities at play in our society, we see this as the ideal moment for Black New Mexicans to have a voice in the conversation about how to address and heal this inequity, specifically as it relates to Black people.
Our Vision
We believe representation matters and as members of the arts community we ask to be made visible in our city; we seek to amplify our voices in the dialogue regarding the development of public and city funded arts & culture programming.
To counter the invisibility we are manifesting the following vision of what Black representation might look like in Santa Fe County and the greater Northern New Mexico region:
Visibility
The presence of a Black person appointed to the city arts and culture department.
Representation
Black representation among the nine person volunteer arts commission, appointed by the mayor.
Celebration
A city sponsored public art project that acknowledges, celebrates, and honors the history of Black people in New Mexico.
We are currently making a CALL FOR BLACK ARTISTS to expand our network and continue to connect with one another and also fundraising for all aspects of arts and culture programming and events. We are in the development phase of events such as art shows, installations, lecture series, residency programs, along with live online events.
“Belief Initiates and guides action— Or it does nothing.” ~o. B
